THE CHEMIST WHO STARED INTO THE VEIL

Roddie in the lab at 3 a.m.,
city blackout drills humming outside,
Bunsen flame blue as a star
no one’s charted yet.

Glassware sweating
morphia and hashish,
beakers like crystal skulls.

She stares into the meniscus
of some nameless solvent
and it stares back,
that bulbous head
already there in the curvature,
waiting for a hand to drag
it down into graphite
and name it Lam.

Pathological chemistry as sacrament:
not measuring blood,
but the viscosity of the veil.

The real violence
wasn’t the portal,
it was the dismissal:

"failed from indifference to the Work,"

as if the body that opened
the aperture was just spent fuel,
as if the first Grey
to step through a human
skull could forget
the exact shape of her neurons.

What if every
abduction story since is just
Lam trying to find her again
across the static,

knocking on military bunkers,
farmhouses,
children’s bedrooms,

searching every frightened witness
for the one woman
whose chemistry tasted like home.

They called her The Camel.

Not because she carried burdens,

but because she crossed deserts
other minds
refused to enter.

Every civilization
needs someone willing
to haul impossible cargo

until history pretends
it arrived by itself.
